Kal & Mel – Proposal

So this happened! .. and it was amazing!

A week earlier I received a phone call from Will who was trying to help his best friend Kal pull of the perfect proposal. They wanted me to capture this moment (so exciting!). The next day Kal phones and we started planning… How were we going to photograph his proposal without Mel catching on? We organised to have a “couples photo shoot” as an early Birthday present for Mel who had always wanted some nice portraits taken of them.

Saturday January 31st, 5pm. We meet at the Botanical Gardens in Brisbane City… planning on beautiful backlit, dappled light photographs… just as a big storm was approaching! We had taken all of 3 photos before I received text messages from my partner Tim, who was on storm watch (so that we didn’t have any hiccups). The messages read:

“Rain!”

and then one minute later “Lots of rain!”

and then 30 seconds later “Get undercover, umbrellas won’t help you now!”

… so we hid!

A casual 45 minutes later of hiding with a bunch of strangers under a Gazebo in the middle of the park the storm finally stopped and we were back on track for the big plan.

Kal and I had our signals worked out so the moment wouldn’t be missed, We had two locations in mind, under an ivy archway or bamboo walkway. Now to find the perfect moment, all we had to do was give each other a thumbs up..

We got to the first location of choice… and we’d had a lot of rain.. water everywhere! Not a great spot to get down on one knee.

Onto location two! Under the bamboo walkway. The spot looks great, but light is fading! But we kept our cool.

“Hey Mel, why don’t you take a second to freshen up while I get my camera settings ready and we set up this shot” – Me

Out of earshot from Mel, Kal and I check we’re both ready and pick our exact spot. I get as far back as I can to give them some space and I ask the love birds to walk towards the perfect spot *insert romantic music on the iPod here*

Check out the photographs below!

This honestly was amazing to be a part of, I cried while editing the photographs! It was an absolute honour to capture this beautiful time for Kal and Mel.

Did I mention while we were hiding under the Gazebo a gentleman asked us if this was an Engagement shoot and if they are getting married, Kal and I both looked at each other and Mel casually says “I don’t know, are we?” How fabulous!

Wishing you an amazing future together x0
